About Africa Day

As a leading emerging market bank, the Standard Bank Group is observing Africa Day for the first time this year. Standard Bank has operations in 18 African countries, including South Africa where its head quarters are based in Johannesburg. Standard Bank’s history in Africa began in Port Elizabeth, on South Africa’s south east coastline, in 1846. Today, we have 40 000 people across Africa.

Africa thumbnailAfrica Day takes place on 25 May each year, marking the establishment of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on 25 May in 1963. In many African countries it is observed as a public holiday.

At Standard Bank we have demonstrated understanding of local conditions, cultures and market drivers in each African country in which we do business. This has underpinned the bank’s success in Africa and other emerging markets.

The Organisation of African Unity (OAU)

It was on 25th May 1963 that the leaders of the then independent Africa made history by establishing the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). This gave significant impetus to the continent’s collective struggle for independence, and since then, African states have stood united in their quest for socio-economic development and political stability for the people of Africa.
